A carer’s ‘love language’ is time and devotion

Your article on the “5 ‘languages’ via which individuals talk tenderness, affection and dedication to their associate” is fascinating, however sadly takes no account of time (Can realizing your ‘love language’ rework your relationship?, 15 July).

I learn it, as I’m certain others may have, and put my very own relationship underneath the microscope. And I’m completely happy to reminisce that in a 56-year relationship, the 5 “languages” – acts of service, phrases of affirmation, bodily contact, high quality time and giving items – have been evident, generally in a shifting cycle, every with its personal tempo. Nonetheless, time and dementia have robbed us. As my husband’s carer, my day by day life is an act of service that lasts 24 hours. And I do really feel like a dad or mum. However it’s an act of affection.

From a person whose life was phrases and languages, there are few phrases of affirmation now. Bodily contact is completely different. Items have been given, however that’s previously. On daily basis is high quality time.
